LUV News: This Morning’s Empire News

NATO leaders have agreed on an Afghanistan exit strategy, reports all major news media this morning, without pointing out that this appears to be an election year scam concerning a very unpopular war. This is spin to cover up the fact that what President Bush called the “coalition of the willing,” is dwindling as nations pull their forces out, realizing that no matter how many die, the Afghan people are not going to accept foreign occupation. France is the latest to say they’ve had enough, and will withdraw their troops by the end of the year. This “exit strategy” scam is a way to spin President Obama’s latest plan to keep troops there until at least 2024. The dates keep moving, go back and read what he promised when running for the White House the first time, followed by his massive troop surge soon after taking office.

President Obama has snubbed the president of Pakistan at the UN meeting, exacerbating hostilities between the two countries, rather than apologize, as Pakistan has rightfully requested, for the slaughter of 24 Pakistani soldiers.  Obama doesn’t seem to understand the severity of the hatred by the Pakistani people for the constant drone bombing of innocents.  Many in Pakistan believe they should move into the Russia/China sphere and abandon the Empire. In the end, Pakistanis believe Afghanistan will stay under their sphere of influence after the Empire has its “Vietnam” moment, and departs.

“As Egyptians prepare to elect their country’s first president since the uprising that toppled dictator Hosni Mubarak, the military junta that has ruled for the last 15 months has shown little sign it is prepared to accept civilian oversight,” begins a piece at IPS News this morning. Mubarak was a military leader who kept Egypt under control of the Empire in return for bribes that made him a billionaire at the expense of his people, and it appears that, despite the valiant efforts of the Egyptian masses to shake off such control, the Empire will not allow democracy to break out there.

And finally, China has responded to the saber-rattling from the Empire in moving military bases, ships and other weapons systems around it, by developing a fifth generation fighter aircraft, the “Mighty Dragon.”  It was inevitable that the Empire’s monopoly on sophisticated weapons systems would be broken, with the corruption in our “defense” industry making as its priority, multimillion dollar salaries for Nuclear Mafia executives, and billions in profits for transnational investors, rather than actually making weapons systems that work.

Mario Piperni on the Gay Thing

Gay and Icky

May 22, 2012 By

You don’t have to be an atheist to understand what it is that really bothers opponents of same-sex marriage.

Exactly right.

If you’ve ever spent time with a homophobe attempting to explain away their bigotry and the reasons they’re against same-sex marriage, they’ll most probably speak of their belief that marriage is a sacred covenant reserved for one man and one woman. Same-sex marriage, they’ll tell you, violates the sanctity of marriage. They might even at some point grin and snort and inform you that homosexuality is a choice thing. The implication here is that if a gay person wants to get married, all they need do is choose a person of the opposite sex to marry. Easy. Switch on, switch off.

Well, the choice part speaks of their ignorance in regards to science’s understanding of sexual orientation, while the sanctity bit speaks of their ignorance in regards to how the Bible deals with the institution of marriage.

It’s got pretty stuff like Genesis 2:22-24,

Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.  The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken out of man.”  For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.

…and then it’s got the not-so-pretty stuff like Deuteronomy 21:10-14.

When you go to war against your enemies and the Lord your God delivers them into your hands and you take captives, if you notice among the captives a beautiful woman and are attracted to her, you may take her as your wife.Bring her into your home and have her shave her head, trim her nailsand put aside the clothes she was wearing when captured. After she has lived in your house and mourned her father and mother for a full month, then you may go to her and be her husband and she shall be your wife. If you are not pleased with her, let her go wherever she wishes. You must not sell her or treat her as a slave, since you have dishonored her.

It’s all quite clear. Raid their land, kill their husbands, take their women, shave their heads, force them into marriage and rape them at will. But when she displeases you and you feel the need to cut off her shackles and let wifey loose, don’t you dare try to sell her for you’re about to make her an outcast. Just let the bitch go.

The sanctity of marriage indeed.

Tell you what, the next time some narrow-minded bigot brings up the sanctity of marriage in regards to same-sex marriage, feel free to ignore them and walk away with the knowledge that what really bugs the hell out of them is that they think gay people are icky.

Greg Palast on Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

What a terrible task to take on at such a dark moment when I would prefer to keep my thoughts private, but someone must speak.

I am, and I hope you are, sickened to see Rupert Murdoch’s New York Post savage our colleague Robert F. Kennedy Jr. while he and his children are in great distress.
I will not answer, and thereby repeat, the cruel libels thrown at Kennedy by the Post.

But let me get this on the record: Kennedy is, and this is no exaggeration, the most committed family man I know. Every single day, he shuts down work, no matter the flood of urgent demands from around the world, for family time, for his kids. He is deeply religious, with a piety and intelligence he communicates with his family so impressive it makes me doubt my atheism.

Kennedy uses his family name, not to further his career, but to widen his children’s understanding and involvement in the world and to try to teach our ignorant nation lessons in moral conduct that his kids have already learned well. To blame Kennedy for his wife’s illness is just further proof of the conclusion of Britain’s Parliament that Murdoch is “unfit to run a newspaper.”  But then, no one would say the NY Post is a newspaper.

Again, I want to extend the condolences of the entire Palast crew to Mary Richardson Kennedy’s family.

When Bobby’s grief and mourning pauses—because it will never end—we look forward to resuming our partnership with him.
