LUV: Ready for War

USA POPULATION BEING PREPARED FOR AN ATTACK ON IRAN

“Nearly half of likely voters think the United States should be willing to use military force to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon,” begins a report at The Hill this morning.

Their poll found that “Forty-nine percent said military force should be used, while 31 percent said it should not and 20 percent were not sure.  Sixty-two percent of likely voters said they were somewhat or very concerned about Iran making a terrorist strike on the United States.”

How did citizens acquire these beliefs?  From their mass media, of course.  Corporate media “journalists” will stick their microphone in front of anyone who says Iran is working on making a nuclear weapon, and they don’t ask for evidence of this, or point out that there is no evidence that Iran is making a nuclear weapon (nor will they inquire as to why it is okay for Israel to have hundreds of nuclear weapons, in their narrowly focused, endless propaganda campaign).

Suggestion and repetition is how it’s done — they had most citizens believing Iraq had weapons of mass destruction before the illegal attack on that nation, and we see that the ruling Forces of Greed have done it again (LUV News, citing the world’s foremost experts on Iraqi weapons, said there were no weapons of mass destruction before the attack, even as the New York Times was misinforming on page one that Iraq was working on a nuclear weapon).

President Obama said yesterday he is “in lockstep” with Israel to bring Iran to heel.  He then said he doesn’t believe Israel has made a decision to attack Iran.  Here, he is trying to have it both ways, on the one hand saying he is united with Israel and on the other hand has no knowledge of an impending attack.

All reports we have read out of Iran show Iranians feel Israel would not dare attack without US support, and Iran’s leaders have stated they will attack both Israeli and American forces in response to an attack on their homeland by Israel.  Since they are surrounded by US forces, surrogates and mercenaries, they have plenty of targets.

“We the Rich…”

Few would argue the fact that Citizens United has been a major player in the Republican primary…and many if not most would concede that none of it has been healthy for the process. And despite Justice Anthony Kennedy’s opinion that “…independent expenditures, including those made by corporations, do not give rise to corruption or the appearance of corruption,” E.J. Dionne has a more cynical take on the Citizens United ruling.

We have seen the world created by the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision, and it doesn’t work. Oh, yes, it works nicely for the wealthiest and most powerful people in the country, especially if they want to shroud their efforts to influence politics behind shell corporations. It just doesn’t happen to work if you think we are a democracy and not a plutocracy.

Two years ago, Citizens United tore down a century’s worth of law aimed at reducing the amount of corruption in our electoral system. It will go down as one of the most naive decisions ever rendered by the court.

[...]

But ascribing an outrageous decision to naiveté is actually the most sympathetic way of looking at what the court did in Citizens United. A more troubling interpretation is that a conservative majority knew exactly what it was doing: that it set out to remake our political system by fiat in order to strengthen the hand of corporations and the wealthy. Seen this way, Citizens United was an attempt by five justices to push future electoral outcomes in a direction that would entrench their approach to governance.

Of course. Does anyone seriously doubt that the five justices who ruled in favor of removing limits on independent spending for political purposes knew exactly what they were doing and the manner in which their ruling would impact the electoral process?

What is most ironic is that the political party which screams loudest about activist judges is the very party which benefits from the biggest act of judicial activism in the history of the United States.
